Summer 2010 at Perspectives

One of the interesting things about the digitisation work that we do is the range of formats that we can be handling. From glass plates to 35mm to videotapes, they all have their own demands and techniques. One thing they have in common though, is the joy of seeing their content brought to light, when it may have been hidden away for many years. This is true both of nationally important archive material and of an individual family photograph.

We are often asked about “future-proofing” material to ensure that it will be available for years to come. We are always happy to advise on good practice for digitised material and on implementing good data backup regimens. “Future-proofing” is a big ask in any field of life, but while we strive to find ways of ensuring longevity and accessibility, we should celebrate the technology and the techniques that have allowed us to bring material from the past to be enjoyed in the present and on into the future.

News! Scottish Nature Photography Awards

The Photographic Competition 2010 is in full swing, attracting entries from around the UK and Europe. Entries are open until 30th November 2010, so there is plenty of time to get out with your camera and to have a look through your collection! Images must be taken in Scotland and there are four categories – Scottish Landscape, Scottish Wildlife, Natural Abstract and Environmental.

We are very excited about the competition and also the exhibition of the winning images that will be touring in 2011. Locations and dates are being added to on an ongoing basis, so keep an eye on the Exhibition section of the website to find your nearest location.

The winner of our recent online public vote for “Favourite Nature Photographer”, Dean Bricknell, has been enjoying some great publicity and interest in his work.
